The accessibility upgrade of the Thornleigh Station precinct forms part of the Transport Access Program (TAP). The Program is an initiative to provide a better experience for public transport customers by delivering accessible, modern, secure and integrated transport infrastructure, with an emphasis on providing equitable access for people with disabilities.

DEM prepared concept design options for a new pedestrian bridge together with new lifts, station access stairs and canopies.  In addition to addressing the functional deficiencies of the station, the project also identified opportunities to provide a better outcome for public transport users and the local community.

Berala Station Access Upgrade

DEM prepared concept design options for Berala Station where the existing island platform could only be accessed by a pedestrian subway and a central platform stair. The options considered  provision of either a lift from the subway, or a new pedestrian bridge together with new lifts.

The preferred option incorporated a new lift servicing the island platform from the pedestrian subway which provided:

  • DDA  compliant access to the station.

  • Direct access from both sides of the station to the platforms.

  • Improved functionality of the interchange, including more legible and safe pedestrian access.

  • Improved visibility and way-finding for customers on the station platform.

  • Increased area of weather protection for commuters on the station platform.

  • Increased activation of the existing station building including new office and bathroom amenities for station staff.
