Global Switch Sydney East and West

DEM was engaged to provide architectural, interior and landscape design services for a major co-location service facility at Pyrmont – Global Switch Sydney West – which was completed in 2005. The facility was an adaptive re-use of the original Government Printers Offices Building on Sydney’s western fringe. The project involved the refurbishment and recladding of the existing building shell and creation of a state-of-the-art data facility together with sophisticated administration accommodation.

DEM has recently completed the design, BIM documentation and tender documentation for the adjoining Global Switch Sydney East Data Centre. The new iconic building adopts a unique machine-like aesthetic to reflect the highly technical functions of the building. Silver metallic ‘veils’ used to clad the building also wrap up and over the rooftop plant thereby screening the plant areas from nearby high rise buildings.

AirTrunk Data Centre, Huntingwood

DEM has recently completed the design and documentation of a secure, mission critical data centre facility at Huntingwood for AirTrunk, a company specialising in the development and operation of large scale data centres in the Asia Pacific region.

DEM were appointed as AirTrunk’s lead Architects to undertake initial site feasibility studies, full concept / schematic design and full documentation.

The overall masterplanned facility comprises two three-storey Technical Office Buildings, with a combined area of 6,280m², and 16 Data Storage Halls, with a total area of 19,600 m², housed in two-storey buildings, all with associated plant rooms and security services.

AirTrunk Data Centre, Derrimut

DEM has recently completed the design and documentation of a secure, mission critical data centre facility at Derrimut for AirTrunk. DEM were appointed to prepare the overall site masterplan and DA submission as well as the concept / schematic design and full documentation for Stage 1 of the development, with future stages to be rolled out in line with industry demand. The facility comprises a new 980m² Technical Office Building; two Data Storage compartments; four Data Storage Hall Buildings, with a gross floor area of 12,400m² each,  and associated backup plant rooms, fire prevention and security services; and ground level plant areas to accommodate back up power and air conditioning plant and equipment.

Business Resumption Site, Sydney

DEM was appointed to act as Architect, Interior Architect and Project Manager for a new Business Resumption Site (BRS) in north-west Sydney.

Priority security concerns were creatively balanced with many other design considerations such as sustainability, accessibility, initial and life cycle costs, natural hazard mitigation, fire protection, energy efficiency and architectural aesthetics.

The BRS features a 4.5 NABERS Energy (ABGR) rated building and services design housed within a sophisticated, state of the art banking office facility.

Award: Winner – Excellence in Construction 2007 - NSW Master Builders Association

Bank Negara Primary Data Centre, Malaysia

Design of a new primary data centre for Malaysia's Central Bank - Bank Negara - located in the Cyberjaya Technology Park, Malaysia. The facility was designed to be highly secure and able to withstand 'natural and intentional' disruption or destruction.

DEM was the lead design consultant working with an international design team, including service engineers and security and bomb blast consultants to ensure the design would have maximum resilience and redundancy.

Metronode Data Centres

DEM was recently commissioned by Metronode, a Division of Leighton Holdings, to develop two new Modular Data Centres for the New South Wales Government and two new Data Centres for Metronode business requirements in Perth and Canberra. The projects are based on the latest state of the art modular prefabricated Blade Room technology.

All Metronode Data Centre sites required the development of a long term masterplan for the future roll out of a number of stand-alone data centres and the full design of a phase one component. The centres incorporate the latest in security planning and technology including biometrics and a range of sophisticated security protocols.

IBM Headquarters

The IBM data centre has successfully operated as a co-location facility for major local and international financial and corporate organisations for over 20 years. DEM was responsible for the design of the 26ha IBM headquarters site which incorporates an ‘L’ shaped data centre and administration centre with five satellite buildings. To ensure the design would meet IBM's needs, staff tests were carried out on prototype office space. The complex features innovative energy systems that harmonise with the natural environment in which the complex is located.

EMC² Sydney Call Centre Facility

DEM was engaged by EMC² to accommodate their new Sydney Call Centre Facility within the Dow Corning building located in the Macquarie University Research and Development Park. As masterplanners for the overall Park and architects for the Dow Corning building, DEM were able to seamlessly accommodate EMC²‘s challenging  technical and mission critical facility requirements. Particular emphasis was placed on high levels of redundancy and security within the new facility.

Telstra Telephone Exchange, Chatswood

A major telephone exchange facility for the Chatswood and northern regions area designed to house a new generation of computerised telecommunications and also be flexible enough to accommodate future technological advances.

As a major regional infrastructure hub, the Chatswood Exchange incorporates a range of specialised measures to ensure continuity of mission critical operations.

The design features uninterrupted technical area floor plates with mission critical services areas located external to the equipment rooms, thus providing a highly flexible and easy ‘churn’ series of technical areas.

The new exchange presented DEM with the opportunity to create a building that was not only effective and efficient, but responded positively to the established Chatswood CBD environment.
