Sydney Harbour Bridge Step Free Access
DEM recently designed and documented lift access to the Sydney Harbour Bridge walkway as part of the Roads and Maritime Services $10 million commitment to the provision of step free access to the Harbour Bridge for people with mobility impairments. The study addressed access to the northern side of the Bridge on Broughton Street, Milsons Point and the southern side of the bridge on Cumberland Street in The Rocks.
Issues addressed included:

Maximising visual integration with the bridge structure and its surroundings.

Minimising impact on heritage values of the Harbour Bridge.

Maximising safety of users.
Lindfield Village Green, Sydney
The Lindfield Village Green project aims to improve local infrastructure and facilities to enhance the social, economic and community life of Lindfield. Located in close proximity to Lindfield railway station, the project incorporates three levels of basement car parking for both commuter and short term use. Above the car parking, the Village Green is to provide a public space for social and recreational use and incorporates a cafe pavilion, gazebo structures and interactive water feature as well as areas for markets, performance and cultural events.
Sustainability initiatives include the provision of photovoltaic panels on the pavilion roofs, stormwater management and Water Sensitive Urban Design measures.

Commuter Car Park Projects, Sydney
DEM has undertaken the feasibility and detailed design and documentation of a number of multi-storey and at-grade commuter car parks for Transport for NSW including carparks at Mt Druitt, St Marys, Blacktown, Cabramatta, Granville, Kiama, Gordon and Canley Vale.
Work encompassed site assessment, feasibility, review of planning controls, visual assessment and preparation of Concept Design Reports. Issues adressed during the design phases included vehicle circulation, pedestrian safety, activation of public spaces, ESD principles and lifecycle and maintenance considerations.
Northern Beaches B-Line (Bus Rapid Transit)
Feasibility and optioneering studies for proposed commuter car parks along the B-Line route at Mona Vale, Warriewood, Narrabeen, Dee Why and Manly Vale undertaken for Transport for NSW. The study identified key statutory controls governing the subject sites as well as the opportunities and constraints related to the planning of the proposed carparks.
An audit of the existing on-street parking along the corridor was also conducted and proposals were developed for car parks to accommodate displaced parking at Neutral Bay, Cremorne, Spit Junction and Collaroy.
Transport Access Program (TAP) Projects, Sydney
The TAP Program is a Transport for NSW initiative to provide a better public transport experience by delivering modern, secure and integrated transport infrastructure, with equitable access for the disabled and ageing.
DEM has prepared concept designs for the following railway stations:

Thornleigh Station - provision of a new pedestrian bridge together with new lifts and new station access stairs and canopies, and enhancement of the entry forecourts.

Berala Station - provision of a new lift servicing the existing island platform.
WestConnex Stage 1B Tender Bid, Sydney
DEM provided urban design, architectural and landscape design services for the Future Connect Joint Venture Tender Bid for the WestConnex Stage 1B project which extends from the M4 at Homebush Bay Drive to the City West Link, Haberfield.
In accordance with the RMS WestConnex Urban Design Framework document, a ‘whole of corridor’ design approach was adopted for the tender submission to ensure a motorway experience that would be legible, identifiable and integrated into the existing urban fabric. A key consideration was enhancement of the driver experience through the built form and landscape design. Reference to significant built and natural features along the route was made to provide visual cues and help create a stimulating journey.
Maldon to Dombarton Railway Link, Picton
Architectural, urban design and landscape pre-construction design work for a 35 km freight rail line between Port Kembla and the Main South Line at Picton. The project incorporated the rail corridor, a 4km tunnel and ventilation building, and seven bridges. Work involved an assessment of the landscape and visual context along the corridor as well as design options for the bridges, tunnel portals and ventilation building. To ensure that design outcomes would contribute to the future character of the areas adjacent to the corridor, DEM established principles and guidelines for the built structures and landscape to address aesthetics, landuse, ecology, landscape, cost effectiveness and safety.
M5 East Motorway, Sydney
The project encompassed preparation of the following:

An Urban Design and Landscape Masterplan for the entire Motorway, a length of 9km.

Urban Design Guidelines for noise amelioration and edge conditions, built elements and motorway details.
-
Detailed urban design and landscape plans for key areas of the Motorway.
Work during all stages required extensive liaison with the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning, the Urban Design Advisory Service, Councils, working groups and the community.
Sydney Airport Projects
DEM has been commissioned to undertake numerous airport projects during the last 12 years including:

Sydney Airport Domestic Terminal 7th Street Multi-Deck Car Park Reference Design and Tender Design – 2008 and 2012.

Concept for the relocation of T2 Kerbside, Public Pickup and Taxi Storage 2011.

Domestic Terminal Transport Interchange Precinct Masterplan 2009.

Sydney Airport Urban Design Study, International Terminal Ground Access Project and SOCOG Olympic Family Overlay 1998.

2010 Vision for the Domestic Terminal - DEM was awarded first place in a design competition to select an urban design consultant for Sydney Airport 1997.
Pacific Highway Upgrade, Warrell Creek to Urunga
As part of the Sinclair Knight Merz project team, DEM prepared the visual assessment and urban design and landscape strategies for the upgrade of the Pacific Highway between Warrell Creek and Urunga, a length of 42km.
Scope of work included:

Preparation of the Urban Design, Landscape and Visual working paper.

The establishment of design objectives and principles for the route options investigation and development stage.

Site assessment of visual and urban design impacts for all route options.

Preparation of urban design and landscape strategies and concepts.
Pacific Highway Upgrade, Kariong to Doyalson
Preparation of an Urban Design Framework for the Pacific Highway from Kariong to Doyalson on the Central Coast that prescribes a 'beyond the pavement' vision for the Highway. The Framework established objectives, principles and guidelines for built elements and landscape treatments as part of upgrade works along this section of the Highway and was developed to achieve the following:

Enhancement of driver experience in terms of legibility and visual amenity.

Respect of the natural environment through which the road passes.

Selection of contextually appropriate elements including fences, noise walls and retaining walls.

Recognition of areas of cultural and heritage value.
-
Integration of the Highway and surrounding areas.
